Every shot in tennis, what it's for, and the one question that tells you which one to hit: am I attacking, neutral, or defending? This is a beginner's guide to tennis shot selection, drawn out on a court board. We cover forehand and backhand drives, topspin and slice, the lob, the drop shot, the approach shot, the volley, half volley and overhead, the passing shot, crosscourt vs down the line, and the three serves. Then we put it all together in one point, go through the five mistakes that cost beginners the most points, and finish with a quick quiz. The rule in one line: → Defending (deep, stretched, fast low ball): hit high and deep, lob, or slice. → Neutral (around the baseline, normal ball): deep topspin, mostly crosscourt. → Attacking (inside the baseline, short high ball): approach, volley, overhead, drop shot, change direction down the line.
