The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse remains one of the most famous engineering disasters in history. On November 7, 1940, the suspension bridge known as Galloping Gertie began twisting violently in 42 mph winds before sections of the structure collapsed into the Tacoma Narrows. But the real cause of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster was far more complex than the commonly repeated explanation of simple resonance.
This documentary explores the engineering failures behind the 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse, including its extremely narrow design, low torsional rigidity, wind-induced vibration and aeroelastic instability. Discover how self-excited torsional flutter created a dangerous feedback loop between the bridge and the wind, causing the structure's movement to intensify until failure. The disaster transformed suspension bridge engineering and helped make aerodynamic analysis and wind tunnel testing essential parts of modern bridge design
