In our Divine Worship Service today we honor The Lutheran Women in Mission LWML. And we focus in our Scripture Lessons, hymns, and Sermon on the issue the Apostle Paul raises in our Epistle Lesson concerning what it means to live in right standing with the LORD and our call to do good works. We begin with a skit performed by members of LOG LWML "Myths of the LWML". Our Opening Hymn is #429 We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died". We responsively read Psalm 80:7-19 where when the LORD allows persecution to come, even as the result of our sinfulness we look to the Son who the LORD has made strong to carry us through and forgive us. Our Old Testament is Isaiah 5:1-7 where Isaiah sings a love song on behalf to the LORD concerning His vineyard Israel and Judah, who, because He planted and provided all they need to produce the sweet grapes of faithful worship and works, but instead have remained unfaithful will find themselves removed from the land. Our Epistle Lesson is Philippians 3:4b-14 where the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul compares the value of the works of his hands with the far superior work of Christ on his behalf, to reveal how useless are our works in securing right standing before our Heavenly Father. Our Gospel Lesson is Matthew 21:33-46 where Jesus, through the Parable of the Wicked Tenants accuses the religious leaders of the day withholding the fruits of faith and love for the Lord by their focus on their own works and their rejecting the Cornerstone of the God's building on earth, the Church. In the Children's Message I have the kids try to walk a straight line backwards not looking, then facing forward looking at the cross, then with me guiding them backwards. God calls us to live walking the straight line of obedience in right standing with Him, and we can't do it. But Christ did that for us, forgives us when we fail, and sends the Holy Spirit to help us walk the straight line of obedience to Him. The Sermon Hymn is #753 "All for Christ I Have Forsaken" The sermon is from Philippians 3:8-12 where we look at how our good works measure up in the presence of a Holy God to see, as Paul describes them, are like dung, worthless to earn us anything before the LORD. Even those good works we are commanded to do in our life of repentant faith are worthless to earn favor or right standing. Christ earned the for us. We are commanded to do good works with a heart of love and obedience for God and our fellow man, knowing it is Christ's superior work in His death and resurrection that earns us right standing and eternal life. Our Offertory is the LWML Pledge Hymn "Praise, Love, and Serve". Our Communion Hymns are: Video Hymn Best of the Best Hymnal #138 "Knowing You", #634 The Death of Jesus Christ, Our Lord, and Video Hymn #566 "By Grace I'm Saved". The Closing Hymn is the LWML Hymn "Serve the Lord with Gladness".
