Forty miles out into the North Atlantic, past the last of the Outer Hebrides, there is an island where people lived for two thousand years and then, one morning in August 1930, asked to leave. This is St Kilda - a full sleep documentary, told slowly, followed by an hour and a quarter of sea and wind to sleep through.
There are no trees on St Kilda. There is no harbour. The cliffs are the highest in Britain and for most of the year the weather is not calm. Yet a community lived there for something close to two millennia, with its own economy, its own daily parliament held in the street, and a way of life built almost entirely on seabirds - gannets, fulmars and puffins taken from vertical rock a thousand feet above the sea by men who climbed barefoot.
Then the steamers came, and the young people left, and in 1930 the last thirty-six islanders wrote to the government and asked to be taken off. They left an open Bible and a small pile of oats on every table, and they did not lock the doors.
This is the whole story, told at a deliberately slow pace with long pauses, quiet narration and no sudden changes in volume - made for falling asleep to. After the narration ends the video continues with a still night sky and a quiet bed of sea and wind, so it plays through the night without dropping into silence or autoplaying you somewhere else.
Best listened to at a low volume with the screen off.
