Alexander Zverev World Number 1: From Diabetes at 4 to the Top at 29

On 2 November 2026 Alexander Zverev became world No. 1 for the first time: the 30th man to reach the top, the first German since Boris Becker and, at 29 and a half, the second-oldest first-time No. 1 after John Newcombe. The road: type 1 diabetes diagnosed at four (which he made public with his foundation), the 2022 Roland Garros ankle injury against Nadal, three lost Grand Slam finals, and a 2026 with Roland Garros and US Open titles and a Wimbledon final. He took No. 1 from Jannik Sinner, who beat him five times this year and has not played since July.
