Every Fourth of July, about 340 million Americans celebrate winning a war — a war that came within one foggy night of being lost. So what if the United States never won its independence? We count down five close calls — Long Island, Trenton, Saratoga and the French alliance, Valley Forge and Yorktown — then flip one of them and follow an alternate timeline: treason trials for the founders, a Canada-style path to self-government, Britain's 1834 abolition of slavery reaching the American South decades early (or sparking a new crisis), the 1763 Proclamation Line and Native lands, no Louisiana Purchase, and a map of British North America. Finally: would it look like Canada or Australia today? ⚠️ Alternate history for education and fun. Real events are fact checked; the "what if" parts are clearly labelled speculation. The US and the UK are close friends today. 0:00 Intro 0:46 Thirteen colonies 1:50 Five close calls 4:22 The war is lost 4:52 Britain's response 5:44 Slavery and the 1800s 6:35 The West 7:36 British North America today 8:20 The verdict 8:41 Your turn Sources: National Park Service (Saratoga, Valley Forge, Yorktown), American Battlefield Trust, George Washington's Mount Vernon, US State Department Office of the Historian (French alliance, Treaty of Paris 1783, Louisiana Purchase), UK Parliament and UCL Legacies of British Slavery (Slavery Abolition Act 1833), Library of Congress (Royal Proclamation of 1763), Government of Canada, US Census Bureau, Statistics Canada, Australian Bureau of Statistics.
