Cyber Kill Chain explained step by step: learn the 7 stages of a cyber attack, from reconnaissance to ransomware, using one realistic attack scenario. Understand how the Lockheed Martin Cyber Kill Chain works, how it compares to MITRE ATT&CK, and how cybersecurity defenders can detect, prevent, and disrupt attacks at each stage.
If you're learning cybersecurity, preparing for a cybersecurity interview, studying for a certification, or working towards a SOC analyst, blue team, or incident response role, this video will help you understand the complete lifecycle of a cyber attack.
The Cyber Kill Chain is a cybersecurity framework introduced by Lockheed Martin in 2011. It breaks down the progression of an intrusion into seven stages, helping security professionals understand how attackers operate, identify detection opportunities, and implement defensive controls before an attack achieves its objectives.
In this video, we explain all 7 stages of the Cyber Kill Chain:
1. Reconnaissance – How attackers gather information about organizations, employees, technologies, and potential entry points.
2. Weaponization – How attackers prepare malicious payloads, phishing messages, or other attack methods.
3. Delivery – How an attack reaches its intended target through email, websites, exposed services, or other channels.
4. Exploitation – How an attacker turns an opportunity into an actual compromise.
5. Installation – How attackers establish persistence and maintain access to compromised environments.
6. Command and Control (C2) – How attackers communicate with compromised systems and issue instructions.
7. Actions on Objectives – How attackers achieve their goals through data exfiltration, lateral movement, ransomware, or other malicious activities.
Rather than simply memorizing definitions, you'll follow a realistic cyber attack scenario involving reconnaissance, a phishing email impersonating a CEO, malicious software execution, persistence, command and control communication, data theft, and ransomware.
You'll learn how these attack stages connect and why understanding their sequence is useful for security operations, threat detection, and incident response.
We also explore the difference between the Cyber Kill Chain and the MITRE ATT&CK framework. While the Cyber Kill Chain describes the progression of an intrusion, MITRE ATT&CK provides a knowledge base of adversary tactics and techniques. Understanding how these frameworks complement each other is valuable for SOC analysts, threat hunters, incident responders, and cybersecurity professionals.
Another important concept covered is the difference between delivery and exploitation. An attack reaching its target does not necessarily mean a compromise has occurred. Understanding this distinction can help you explain attack progression accurately during cybersecurity interviews and investigations.
Finally, we examine how defensive security controls such as email filtering, endpoint detection and response (EDR), firewalls, IDS/IPS, network segmentation, access controls, data loss prevention, and backups can help prevent, detect, disrupt, or contain cyber attacks.
Whether you're studying cybersecurity fundamentals, preparing for CompTIA Security+, learning about the MITRE ATT&CK framework, or developing practical blue team skills, this explanation will help you build a stronger understanding of how cyber attacks unfold and how defenders can respond.
