Is the Harvey Compass ST-1500 worth $1,500? In this video, I give you a full hands-on review — the good, the bad, and the workarounds — plus I walk you through the exact tools and jigs you need to handle the same cuts if you don't have a sliding table attachment for your table saw.
What's covered:
• Breaking down sheet goods with a track saw
• Cross cutting large panels on the table saw
• Cross cutting normal and smaller pieces
• Making angled cuts and miter cuts
• Tool and jig alternatives to a sliding table (crosscut sled, miter gauge, and more)
The ST-1500 does a lot of things right. The ball-bearing slider is silky smooth, the miter fence system is highly accurate, the vernier angle setter is excellent for dialing in angled cuts, and the flip stops with micro-adjusters make repeatable crosscuts fast and reliable. For sheet goods, large panel crosscuts, and cabinet work, this thing genuinely changes the way you use your table saw.
But there are real downsides worth knowing before you buy. Every time you remove the sliding table from the saw, you have to re-square the fence to the blade — it doesn't return to 90° automatically. The fence also gets in the way during long rip cuts. There's no way to mount a sacrificial fence, there's noticeable deflection in the flip stops under pressure, and the adjustment knobs can conflict with each other depending on your setup.
Whether you're considering the Harvey ST-1500, comparing it to the SawStop sliding table, or just trying to figure out whether any sliding table attachment is worth it for your shop — this video gives you a real-world answer.
