The San Andreas Fault gets all the attention, but the Cascadia Subduction Zone is the real threat. This 600-mile megathrust fault off the coast of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia is capable of producing a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and a 100-foot tsunami that could devastate the entire Pacific Northwest.
The last time the Cascadia fault ruptured was January 26, 1700, when it triggered a massive earthquake that drowned entire forests in saltwater and sent an orphan tsunami across the Pacific Ocean to Japan.
