9 Peaceful New York Towns So Affordable, You'll Wonder Why Nobody's Retiring There
A real 49-bed hospital on Main Street, and homes selling for around $136,500. In New York. These 9 peaceful upstate towns pair real healthcare with prices that look like they're from another decade, and every one comes with its honest catch.
New York has a reputation for high costs, but that reputation belongs to a small corner of a very big state. New York doesn't tax Social Security. Pensions from New York State, New York local governments, and the federal government are fully exempt. After age 59½, the first $20,000 a year of private pension and IRA income is excluded, per person. And if you already have basic STAR, the state now upgrades eligible homeowners to Enhanced STAR automatically at 65.
For every town, we cover the home prices, the nearest hospital, what makes it special, and the downside nobody else mentions. Upstate property taxes are some of the steepest in America, so we don't skip the hard parts.
Which town surprised you most? Which one would you actually move to? And if you live in one of these nine, tell us what we missed in the comments. You know it better than any list.
If this showed you a New York you never pictured, subscribe. We keep looking where nobody else does.
