Prototype was one of those games that felt impossible to ignore in 2009.
Alex Mercer could run up buildings, glide across Manhattan, consume enemies, destroy tanks, and tear through the city like a living biological weapon. The movement is still fast and satisfying, the powers are still cool, and there is real value in the game’s over-the-top spectacle.
But replaying Prototype also made its weaknesses much harder to ignore. The combat is often clunky and chaotic, mission design becomes repetitive, the targeting can be unreliable, and the game repeatedly undercuts the power fantasy it is trying to sell.
Prototype is still easy to appreciate as an idea. As a complete game, though, it is much more uneven than I remembered.
This is my review and reassessment of Prototype.
