Defending the Faith: What Apologetics Can (and Can’t) Do (Ep.024)

Have you ever avoided a conversation about your faith because you were afraid someone would ask a question you couldn’t answer? You’re not alone. In this episode of The 4:12 Podcast, Ryan and Joel talk about apologetics, the work of giving a reasoned defense of the Christian faith. Starting in 1 Peter 3:15–16, they explain how apologetics differs from evangelism. They also explain why no argument can win someone into the kingdom of God, and why that truth brings freedom instead of pressure. They then walk through the three main approaches to apologetics: classical, evidential, and presuppositional. Along the way they share real conversations where these ideas were put to the test. They close with practical encouragement for anyone who wants to speak about Jesus with confidence, gentleness, and respect. Key Topics Covered: What “apologetics” means and where the word comes from (1 Peter 3:15) Evangelism vs. apologetics: proclaiming the gospel vs. defending it What apologetics can’t do, and why only the Holy Spirit changes hearts Knowledge, assent, and trust: the Reformers’ three parts of saving faith Why apologetics may help doubting believers as much as skeptics Classical apologetics and the cosmological argument Evidential apologetics and what archaeology can (and can’t) prove Presuppositional apologetics (Cornelius Van Til, Francis Schaeffer) and how to use it with gentleness Next steps for defending your faith with neighbors, coworkers, and family -- About The 4:12 Podcast: Ephesians 4:12 says the Lord gave leaders “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” The 4:12 Podcast is created by Restoration Church in Southlake, TX, with an aim to teach and discuss biblical, theological, and cultural topics for the purpose of equipping all believers for gospel ministry in today’s world.
