What If There Were Tornadoes on Black Holes? A normal tornado wouldn’t stand a chance near a black hole. It would be pulled in, stretched apart, and disappear almost immediately. But here’s the strange part. Black holes already have things that behave a lot like tornadoes. A spinning black hole can drag space itself around with it through a process called frame dragging. Gas and dust can whirl around in an accretion disk at enormous speeds, some black holes can launch plasma jets thousands of light-years long, and the environment around them makes even the strongest tornado on Earth look tiny. In this episode of What If Stickman, we compare tornadoes with some of the most extreme physics in the universe, from the ergosphere and spaghettification to accretion disks, relativistic jets, and even the possibility of stealing energy from a spinning black hole. Could a tornado survive near a black hole? How fast can matter move around one? What happens if you fall toward the event horizon? And could a future civilization actually use a spinning black hole as an energy source? Watch until the end to find out. 🌪️🕳️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Tornadoes on Black Holes? 00:25 A Normal Tornado vs a Black Hole 01:16 Black Holes Spin 01:46 Space Starts Twisting 02:07 The Ergosphere 02:54 The Accretion Disk 03:11 How Fast Is a Black Hole “Storm”? 04:06 Falling Toward a Black Hole 04:17 Spaghettification 04:43 Black Hole Jets 05:11 Stealing Energy From a Black Hole 05:50 So Who Wins? 06:07 The Fastest Cow in History 💬 Got an impossible question you want us to test next?
