What's the best country to live in? We scored every country on earth from 0 to 100 in 2026 using five checkable numbers: money, health, safety, travel risk and schooling. The richest countries, the safest countries and the best places to live do not line up the way you would expect. The USA's placement is going to start a fight. One country wins alone.
HOW THE SCORE WORKS
Five pillars. Each one scores 0 to 10. Add them up, double the total, and you get a score out of 100. Every input is a published number from a primary source. The formula is ours, the data is not.
1. WEALTH - GDP per person, adjusted for what money actually buys (PPP). World Bank, 2024. $1,000 scores 0, $150,000 scores 10, on a log scale, because the gap between $2k and $4k changes a life far more than $60k to $62k does.
2. HEALTH - life expectancy at birth. World Bank, 2024. 55 years scores 0, 85 years scores 10.
3. SAFETY - homicide rate per 100,000 people. WHO Global Health Estimates, 2021, both sexes. Zero scores 10, fifty per 100k scores 0, log scale again, because 1 to 2 per 100k is a bigger real change than 30 to 31.
4. RISK - the Government of Canada's official travel advisory for that country, converted to 0-10, where 10 means "exercise normal security precautions" and 0 means "avoid all travel". Re-pulled live from travel.gc.ca on the day this went up.
5. EDUCATION - mean years of schooling for adults 25 and over. UNDP Human Development Report, 2023 data. 2 years scores 0, 14 years scores 10.
WHAT WE LEFT OUT, ON PURPOSE
No freedom or democracy index. Those are editorially contested and would turn the whole thing into a politics argument instead of a measurement. No cost of living, because the only global datasets for it are crowdsourced and do not meet the sourcing bar we hold everything else to. No weather, because there is no defensible way to score "nice climate" that survives contact with an actual thermometer.
WHY SOME COUNTRIES ARE B:
A country needs all five pillars to get a score. Missing even one and it stays grey rather than getting a partial score built on a different denominator to everyone else. That is 162 countries scored. Microstates like Singapore and Monaco have no shape on a world map at this scale, so they are not drawn, and North Korea has no published GDP or schooling data at all. The gap is the story there.
