Filmed in Ireland for the Nighthawks programme. Johnny had previously shown his respect for Bob Dylan by covering 'Like a Rolling Stone', also on the Hurt Me album. and may have been drawn to this song as it's about an Italian-American mobster Joey Gallo, who despite being convicted of extortion and acccused of murder was viewed sympathetically by many who viewed him as an Italian-American folk hero. After Dylan was criticised for the lyrics for glorifying Gallo, he said that his co-writer Jaques Levy had actually written the lyrics. Johnny's version abbreviates the lyrics of Dylan's much longer version originally released on his 'Desire' album.
