It begins on a maple-lined path at dusk. Maples in the afterglow, falling leaves, a valley of autumn brocade. Past the maple pond and the old temple, into the long autumn night. Under the lantern light, wrapped in fallen leaves, you drift off to sleep. The same autumn night comes around twice, played differently the second time. It ends quietly in the sleep of fallen leaves. It carries through until morning without waking you. They say maple leaves are at their reddest just before they fall. The end of a day feels a little like that to me. Whatever kind of day today was, these are three hours for nothing more than falling asleep, slowly, like a leaf.
