We took the 161 most-rated TV series on IMDb that ran three seasons or more and averaged every season's episode ratings. Then one test: is each season better than the one before? Shows improve about half the time, so luck alone should give you nine. Only four passed: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Daredevil, BoJack Horseman and The Wheel of Time. Then the twist: three of those four were cancelled or ended by their network at their best. Plus the near misses (Breaking Bad, Succession, Schitt's Creek by 0.01), the biggest comebacks after a weak first season (Parks and Recreation, Seinfeld, Star Trek: The Next Generation), and why ending on your best season is so rare.
