For years, everyone agreed on one thing: Europe had lost the energy race. America had the startups. China had the factories. And Europe? Europe had committees, delays, and meetings about meetings. Then, in May 2025, something changed. Inside a research facility in northern Germany, a fusion machine held a plasma at record performance for 43 seconds. For a pulse that long, nothing on Earth had ever scored higher. Less than a year later, a startup born from that same institute announced plans to build Europe’s first commercial fusion power plant on the site of a retired nuclear reactor. Then came another shock. In July 2026, the company raised 411 million euros in a single funding round. Google invested. One of Germany’s largest energy companies invested. All of it for a startup barely three years old. Behind them stands a government that has promised more than 2 billion euros and says out loud that it wants the world's first fusion power plant built on German soil. What is happening in Europe right now is not a slogan, a strategy paper, or a political promise. It is a race with a timetable, a construction site, and a bill. And to understand why so many people suddenly believe Europe could lead the next energy revolution, we need to go to a city on Germany's Baltic coast and see what happened inside a machine called Wendelstein 7-X.
