A reindeer mother gives birth alone on the frozen Arctic tundra, and her newborn calf has less than an hour to stand before wolves find it.
In late May, hundreds of reindeer arrive at their ancient calving ground after weeks of migration through deep snow. One heavily pregnant female leaves the herd to give birth on open ground, where there is no shelter, only distance and visibility to protect her. What follows is one of nature's fastest races for survival: a wet, trembling calf that must stand, nurse, and walk within hours, while a wolf, a golden eagle, and the coming insect season all close in.
In this video, you'll learn:
Why female reindeer grow antlers and how they use them to survive winter
How reindeer calving season is timed so newborns outnumber predators
Why a reindeer mother leaves the herd to give birth alone
How a newborn reindeer calf stands, walks, and runs within its first day
How mother and calf learn each other's voice among hundreds of animals
How the herd escapes wolves and mosquito swarms during the Arctic summer migration
