The Artisans Behind the Sound of Korea! The Amazing Process of Making Traditional Instruments Hello, this is King Process. Traditional Korean drums, moktak, daegeum, and janggu are all made by skilled artisans, but each produces sound in a different way. They adjust the tension of animal hide, hollow out wood, and make precise holes in bamboo. In this video, we follow the making of four traditional Korean instruments. First is drum making by artisan Im Dong-guk. He learned bukmeugi, the craft of making traditional drums, from his father Im Seon-bin, a recognized holder of the tradition. He makes the wooden drum body, prepares the hide, and stretches it tightly to bring out the drum’s sound. We also see how he checks the sound at the end of the process. Next is moktak maker Kim Deok-ju of Yeongcheon Chamsun Moktak, who has made these wooden percussion instruments for more than 40 years. He shapes the wood, hollows it out, and listens to its sound as he refines the inside. He then lets the partly finished moktak rest for about 100 days before tuning it. Yeongcheon Chamsun Moktak’s work Sound of a Thousand Years won the grand prize at the 2023 Traditional Culture Product Competition. Making a daegeum, a traditional Korean bamboo flute, involves a year of waiting. Gaya Kim Gi-ryong is a certified practitioner of Daegeum Sanjo, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 45, and also makes the instrument himself. He selects the bamboo and forms the blowing hole, the finger holes, and the membrane hole that gives the daegeum its distinctive sound. The video follows the work of turning a piece of bamboo into an instrument. Finally, we see a janggu being made from a log. The wood is shaped into an hourglass body, and hide is fitted to both ends. The two drumheads are connected with cords, which are tightened to adjust the sound. Wood and hide can produce very different sounds depending on how they are shaped, fitted, and tightened.
