USS Archerfish ended the Shinano ten days after her commissioning. At 3:16 on 29 November 1944, a 1,526-ton submarine fired six Mark 14 torpedoes at a 72,000-ton Japanese carrier, and four of them hit. Japan would never again put a warship of that size to sea. This documentary follows the third Yamato-class hull from its keel at Yokosuka on 4 May 1940, through the post-Midway conversion into a support carrier, to the unfinished night passage out of Tokyo Bay toward Shiono-misaki on 28 November 1944. It covers the missing watertight doors, the untrained damage-control crews, the repaired Mark 14, Commander Joseph Enright's six-hour end-around, the 1,435 lives lost, and the four factors that turned the heaviest carrier any navy had yet put to sea into a wreck in under eight hours. Built from after-action reports, ship movement tables, loss tables and the postwar Naval Technical Mission findings, with disagreements between sources noted where they exist.
