Why perfume is a haunting: the science of smell and memory, the ghost flowers inside every lily of the valley and violet perfume, the Osmothèque’s dead perfumes kept under argon in Versailles, and the bottles people keep to keep a person. On the table: Le Parfum de Thérèse, vintage Lanvin Arpège, vintage Diorissimo, 1970s Mitsouko, BPAL Dorian, Amouage Portrayal Woman, Féminité du Bois, Oriza L. Legrand, Lubin Black Jade.
Halloween is two weeks away, so this is where the spooky season starts: two Saturdays of ghost stories, and every ghost in them is a perfume. A perfume has no smell until it leaves you, and everything you can smell on your wrist has already gone. The industry has spent a hundred and forty years selling that as youth.
Chapter one is the science: Rachel Herz’s 2004 museum study, which found that a smell gives you the same memory a picture does and makes you feel it, and Willander and Larsson’s 2006 study, which found that smell is the only cue that reaches back before the age of ten. The bottle that proves it is a vintage Arpège bought on eBay because my mother wore it. Then the widows who ration a dead husband’s shirts, the company that offered to bottle him, the bishop whose burning body smelled of baking bread in the year 155, and the Pope who filed the smell of the dead as a third-class miracle.
Chapter two is the séance: how the trade raises flowers that can’t be extracted, from the 1893 violet accident to headspace, and why the molecules standing in for lily of the valley keep getting banned. Vintage Diorissimo against the current bottle, Luca Turin’s verdict, and the Dioriginals reissue of 1 October 2026. Then Oriza L. Legrand, a Paris house raised from the dead in 2012, and Hegel, who threw smell out of the arts for “material volatility in air.”
Chapter three is the Osmothèque, where six thousand perfumes are remade from formula and kept at twelve degrees under argon, and the one rule it won’t break; Lubin’s Black Jade and the Marie-Antoinette legend with its dates checked; and a 1970s Mitsouko with the oakmoss untouched, against what the 2017 regulation did to every chypre.
