Moving a parent into assisted living can feel a little like dropping your child off at college... except now it's Mom or Dad you're hoping will make friends, join activities, eat with other people, and eventually feel at home.
What should you expect when an aging parent moves into assisted living, independent living, or memory care? And just as importantly, what should THEY expect?
In this episode of Aging Parent Trap X, Allison, Nikki, and Julie have a candid conversation about what life can really be like after an elderly parent moves into a senior living community.
We talk about the transition from the family home into senior living, the adjustment period, making friends, getting involved in activities, meeting other residents, and how adult children can help their parents begin to see this move as another chapter of life rather than simply the loss of their old one.
We also discuss something families should be thinking about BEFORE choosing a senior living community.
🏠 Don't just take the official tour.
If possible, visit more than once. Have lunch or dinner there. Look at the activity calendar. Pay attention to whether residents are actually participating. Talk to residents and ask them what they think about living there. Notice how the staff interacts with people when they aren't specifically giving you a tour.
Because a beautiful lobby doesn't tell you what your parent's everyday life is going to be like.
In this episode, we discuss:
• What to expect when moving a parent into assisted living
• Helping an elderly parent adjust to senior living
• Independent living vs. assisted living vs. memory care
• What the first days and weeks may feel like
• Helping Mom or Dad meet people and make friends
• Why activities and socialization matter
• What families should look for before choosing a facility
• Why you should consider eating a meal at the community before deciding
• Talking with current residents about their experiences
• Helping an aging parent embrace this new chapter of life
• What adult children should expect emotionally during the transition
Moving an aging parent into senior living is a major adjustment for everyone involved. There may be excitement, sadness, guilt, relief, uncertainty and plenty of second-guessing.
But moving into senior living doesn't mean your parent's life is over. It can be the beginning of a very different chapter, with new routines, relationships, activities and experiences.
