In the winter of 1811–12, three great New Madrid earthquakes shook the Mississippi Valley. The river ran backward for minutes, but that is not what made Tennessee's Reelfoot Lake.
The ground made it. A buried fault pushed one side of the valley up and dropped the other, and a creek backed up over a forest. The trees died standing, and their stumps can still be seen in the lake. This documentary reads the letters written that winter, the 1912 USGS field study by Myron Fuller, and USGS lidar that still shows the step the ground left along the lake's western shore. It also covers who paid, from Little Prairie to the 1815 land-certificate law, and what scientists say about the fault today.
