Mata Vaishno Devi is a revered Hindu goddess and manifestation of the Supreme Mother Goddess, Shakti. Her famous cave shrine sits at an altitude of 5,200 feet in the Trikuta Hills of Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, where she is worshipped through three natural rock formations (Pindis) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.
Deity and Legend
• Manifestation: Embodies the combined spiritual energies of Maha Kali (destruction), Maha Lakshmi (maintenance), and Maha Saraswati (creation).
• The Legend: Born as Vaishnavi, she meditated in the Trikuta Hills on the instructions of Lord Rama. When the tantrik Bhairon Nath pursued her, she beheaded him at the cave mouth and later forgave him, granting him the boon that pilgrims must visit his temple after her darshan.
• Sacred Form: She transformed into a 5.5-foot-tall rock with three natural head formations (Pindis) inside the holy cave.
The Pilgrimage (Yatra)
• Base Camp: The trek begins from Katra, located about 42 km from Jammu.
• Trek Distance: The main cave shrine is roughly a 12 to 14 km walk one-way.
• Key Stops: Includes the Ardh Kumari cave (where the goddess meditated for 9 months) and Sanjhichhat.
• Travel Options: Pilgrims can walk, use ponies, hire palanquins, or take helicopter services from Katra to Sanjhichhat.
• Management: Managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, which handles facilities like 24/7 free langars and online registration.
