Side Quest #10 - Kamen Del, 1,862 meters. A misty autumn hike through Vitosha.

Into Narnia The last weekend of September gave us one of those strange mountain days where the weather becomes most of the experience. A friend and I took an unfamiliar route through Vitosha, covering about 14 kilometres to Kamen Del and back while passing several huts along the way. There was a decent amount of climbing, but nothing particularly demanding. What made the day memorable was the mist. The deeper we went into the forest, the thicker it became. At times the path disappeared into white only a short distance ahead of us. It genuinely felt like walking into another world. Then, closer to the peak, the wind started moving everything around. One moment we could see perhaps 50 metres ahead. A few seconds later, the mist would sweep across the mountain and we could barely see the ground in front of us. Then it would open again. Then disappear. It kept changing like that all the way toward the summit. There was no grand view waiting for us at the top either. Nothing. Just mist. And somehow that made the day better. A small peak, a new route, good company, autumn slowly settling over Vitosha, and a mountain that decided not to show us very much at all. Sometimes the atmosphere is the view.
