LYRICS Those who go to the woods are the mother and the daughter. The mother goes singing, the daughter sighs: “Why do you sigh, my daughter Marguerite? — A mighty anger burns inside me, yet I dare not tell you: I am a maiden by day, and a white doe by night. The hunt is after me, barons and princes, and my brother Renaud, who is worse than all the rest. Have him call off his hounds until tomorrow at noon! — Where are your hounds, Renaud, and your fine hunt? — They are in the woods, running down the white doe. — Call them off, Renaud, call them off, I beg you!” Three times he sounded his copper horn; at the third call, the white doe was taken. He who flayed her said: “I know not what to say — she has golden hair and the breast of a maiden.” She is served at table to the barons and princes: “We are all gathered here, save my sister Marguerite.” — You have only to eat; I am the first served: my head is on the platter, my heart at my ankles.” Those who go to the woods are the mother and the daughter.
