Mist Over the Yellow Mountains | Chinese Bamboo Flute and Erhu for Focus | World Music

Dawn on Huangshan, the Yellow Mountains. A stone stairway climbs along the edge of a granite ridge, and below it there is no ground at all - only a sea of cloud, with sharp grey peaks standing up out of it like islands. A small pavilion sits on the nearest summit. The first sun is coming up on the right and turning the edges of the rock gold. Somewhere on the path, a woman is playing a bamboo flute. Did you know? The Chinese flute, the dizi, has a small hole covered with a tissue-thin membrane, traditionally shaved from the inside of a reed. When the flute is played, that membrane vibrates, and that is where the bright, buzzing edge of its voice comes from. Without it, the dizi would sound like any other flute. The erhu in this hour came from somewhere else. It is generally traced back to a bowed instrument of the nomadic peoples of the north, which travelled into China along the old routes and slowly became the two-stringed fiddle we know. And even the mountain's famous pines are, in a way, travellers: they do not grow from soil, but root themselves in cracks in the bare granite and split the rock open as they grow, which is why their trunks bend into such strange shapes.
