Eleven pieces, sequenced as one descent. Subliminal opens because it is the darkest and the quietest thing I have — four minutes that ask nothing of you. From there it goes down rather than up, and the deeper it goes the less it explains itself. I did not arrange this by instinct. I measured every track — how loud it sits, how wide its dynamics run, how much of its energy lives above five kilohertz, and where it sits between voice and bass — and built the order as a single line: the quietest first, the densest through the middle hour, the peak two thirds of the way in where it has room to land. Every transition is an eight-second crossfade, placed by hand. Everything sits at one mastering level, so the set never lurches when a track changes. That was the whole point of putting them together. Play it loud, or play it while you work and forget it is on. Both were intended.
