For almost a quarter of a century, Will Keith Kellogg kept the books and ran the errands of his older brother — the most famous doctor in America. Then, in 1906, at forty-five, he walked out. With a flake of toasted corn and his own signature, he built a company whose name is still on breakfast tables around the world. And the brother who once ordered him about would fight him in court for years — over the right to their own surname.
Near the end, the dying doctor wrote a letter asking to make amends. It is usually told as the story of a brother who refused to forgive. The truth is stranger, and sadder. This is the true story of John Harvey Kellogg and W.K. Kellogg: the Battle Creek Sanitarium, the invention of corn flakes, a lakeside manor built by a lonely, newly rich man — and the letter that came too late.
