For a long time, I felt like scene, emo, goth, punk, and alternative style just wasn’t for people like me. I loved the music, the skinny jeans, dramatic hair, band tees, eyeliner, colorful accessories, and everything about the alternative aesthetic, but I was scared of what liking those things said about me. In this video, I’m talking about the complicated relationship I had with Black identity and alternative culture growing up, the shame, the fear of being judged, the pressure to fit certain expectations, and why being different sometimes felt like something I needed to hide. This isn't a history lesson or a definitive take on Black culture. It’s my personal experience growing up Black and feeling like there were certain versions of myself that were more socially acceptable than others. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to find the “right” label. Maybe I just needed to let myself like what I liked. 🖤 If you grew up feeling like you were “too different,” “too weird,” “too Black,” “too white,” or just never quite fit into one box, I hope this video feels like a conversation with a friend.
