2001/02 — Robbie Savage | A Visit to the Referee’s Toilet

Robbie Savage is one of those Premier League players who seems to exist in fragments. The peroxide hair, the confrontations, the exaggerated falls, the arguments and, occasionally, something completely ridiculous. For the 2001/02 episode of Bizarre, I wanted to go back to one of the strangest of those moments: a visit to the referee’s toilet ten minutes before Leicester City played Aston Villa at Filbert Street. Using the match ticket, the Premier League sticker album, Premier Gold 2002 and a Robbie Savage foil from Wizards of the Coast Football Champions, this is really a film about reputation, memory and the way an entire career can gradually become reduced to a handful of familiar clips. There is also some time for footballing superstition, one of my favourite Paolo Di Canio cards and what may well be the most expensive trip to the toilet in Premier League history.
