For most student pilots, autorotations feel overwhelming at first. And the ones we practice in flight school are usually the standard version, with the runway right in front of us. But the engine won't always fail under those perfect conditions. That's why practicing this maneuver matters: learning to look for and choose the best place to land, while keeping your RPM in the green. In this video we break the autorotation down into its four phases and show you how to manage each one. 1. Entry — lower the collective and move the cyclic aft to keep the RPM in the green. 2. Glide — manage your RPM to keep it in the green. You can extend the glide or slow it down. 3. Flare — use the inertia of the rotor system and your airflow to reduce speed and set up for landing. 4. Touchdown — the phase flight schools rarely practice, and the one students fear most because they've never done it. But in real life it's one of the most important: the goal is a clean landing, safe and sound. KSA — Knowledge. Skills.
