The Life You Planned Is Not the Life That Saves You

What happens when you spend half your life chasing success, only to discover you may have been chasing the wrong damn thing? Bill Moran sits down with longtime friend and Billified regular Mark “The Soldier” for a funny, brutally honest, and surprisingly thoughtful conversation about getting older, starting over, and figuring out what actually matters. Their friendship goes back to 1993 and the glorious insanity of Rochester's legendary WCMF and Brother Wease Morning Circus. But 33 years later, life looks a hell of a lot different. Mark has gone from radio and television to owning a bar, surviving career changes, and ultimately finding something he never expected: genuine happiness working with kids in education. Bill and Mark revisit the wild days of Rochester radio, the corporate machine that changed broadcasting, and the strange realization that professional success and personal fulfillment aren't always the same thing. But this isn't just two guys reminiscing about the good old days. They get into the uncomfortable stuff, too: mental health, aging bodies, changing priorities, relationships with age gaps, the importance of having a supportive partner, and why turning 55 might finally give you permission to stop giving a damn what everybody else thinks. Bill also opens up about life after radio, personal health scares, and the unexpected ways our choices, relationships, and experiences can change how we define success. The episode ends with Bill and Mark floating the idea of launching a new Gen X-focused podcast together and inviting listeners to help name it. t's funny, occasionally inappropriate, surprisingly personal, and filled with the kind of conversations that happen when two old friends realize they're still making this shit up as they go along. Because sometimes the life you never imagined turns out to be the one you needed all along. Welcome aboard the pirate ship. This is Billified.
