Lane Johnson retired today after 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving a 2-2 team without its starting right tackle mid-season. He had already said this year would be his last. Markel Bell, a rookie third-round pick, takes over at right tackle. He made his first start last week. Behind him the line is already thin: Landon Dickerson is on injured reserve with a knee, Cam Jurgens is questionable in concussion protocol, and the group was struggling to protect Jalen Hurts before any of this. Johnson leaves as a nine-time postseason starter and, per Pro Football Focus, the holder of the longest streak by any tackle in the PFF era without allowing a sack. Also in this breakdown: what Johnson's fourteen years in Philadelphia actually produced, why right tackle is the hardest spot on the line to replace mid-season, where the Eagles rank in pass protection, how Markel Bell, Tyler Steen, Jordan Mailata and Willie Lampkin fit together now, what Johnson said about stepping away, his Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame case, and what Jacksonville, Carolina and Dallas look like for this offensive line over the next three weeks. ========================================================== TIMESTAMPS ========================================================== 0:00 Lane Johnson Retires 0:15 Why He Is Stepping Away 0:36 A Hall of Fame Career 1:42 The Eagles Pass Protection Problem 2:02 Markel Bell Takes Over at Right Tackle 2:30 Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson Injuries 3:07 Who Leads the Offensive Line Now 3:43 Two Years of Bad Offensive Line Play 4:17 What Lane Johnson Meant to the Eagles 4:49 What This Means for the Eagles Offense 5:15 Jaguars, Panthers, Cowboys: The Next Three 5:31 Ring of Honor and Canton 5:49 Protecting Jalen Hurts 6:07 Offseason: Sirianni and the Draft 6:54 Final Thoughts Image credits: Lane Johnson (2017) and Eagles offensive line (2017) by Keith Allison, CC BY-SA 2.0.
