The Real Reasons Hitler Never Invaded Switzerland — Despite Having a Plan
🇨🇭 In June 1940, only days after France signed its armistice, German Captain Otto Wilhelm von Menges was ordered to study an attack on Switzerland. By October, the invasion had a name: Operation Tannenbaum.
The plan was real. German forces were positioned near Switzerland, and German planners expected the Swiss Army to surrender quickly. Yet the invasion never happened.
Why?
The answer is more complicated than Swiss neutrality or the mountains alone.
This documentary examines four possible explanations. Switzerland's neutrality offered surprisingly little protection in a Europe where Germany had already occupied other neutral countries. The Alps and General Henri Guisan's national redoubt raised the potential cost of an invasion, especially around the strategically important Gotthard tunnels. Switzerland's economy and railway network also remained useful to Germany, carrying coal and other goods through the Alps.
And then there was Hitler's changing war.
The invasion plan emerged during the summer and fall of 1940, when Germany was fighting Britain and preparing for a much larger conflict in the East. By 1941, the Wehrmacht had opened the Soviet front. Every new campaign made an attack on Switzerland harder to justify.
This documentary follows the German attack studies, General Guisan's defense strategy, the Rütli meeting, Operation Tannenbaum, the Gotthard railway, Swiss economic cooperation with Germany, and the historical evidence surrounding the question of why Switzerland remained outside the war.

This documentary is based on historical records, the Swiss Historical Dictionary, the Bergier Commission, wartime documents, diaries, letters, and public historical sources. Some narrative transitions and reconstructed scenes may be dramatized for documentary-style storytelling. Where the historical record does not establish a single definitive reason for Hitler's decision, the documentary presents the competing explanations and weighs them against the surviving evidence rather than treating one theory as certain. 📜
