Pokémon B/W2 Remix: Rival Battle (2nd Remix)

Surprise! I haven’t touched this theme in around 4 years, and this time I really wanted to come back to it with something completely different. For this remix, I decided to go for an EDM x Drum and Bass approach. Compared to some of my more atmospheric or experimental remixes, this one is much closer to your standard EDM and breakbeat style, but I still wanted to put my own spin on it and make sure it had plenty of energy throughout. I actually used a lot of the stock Logic VSTs for this one as well. Sometimes it’s fun going back to the basics and seeing how much you can get out of the sounds and tools that are already there rather than overcomplicating everything. The main thing I wanted from this remix was for it to feel energetic and unpredictable, which I think fits the rival from this game perfectly. He’s constantly rushing around, appearing when you least expect him and bringing a lot of chaotic energy with him. At the same time, I’ve always thought he’s a deeply misunderstood character underneath all of that, which made him even more interesting to base the feeling of this remix around. Musically, if you enjoyed my remix of the GSC Gym Leader theme, this one is very similar in spirit. There’s a lot of that fast-paced EDM energy, breakbeats and heavier rhythmic elements, while still trying to keep the original melody recognisable. It was really fun revisiting a theme I haven’t worked with in such a long time and approaching it from a completely different direction than I probably would have 4 years ago. It’s always interesting seeing how much my production style and ideas have changed when I go back to older themes. I’ll be starting my new semester within the next week or so things are about to get pretty busy again.
