With its coiled shell and delicate tentacles, this elusive animal is usually associated with deeper waters. New Caledonia offers a rare opportunity to observe it at recreational diving depths, with sightings recorded at different locations, particularly during the cooler months. Meeting a nautilus in the beam of a dive light is a special experience — one of the encounters that makes exploring these waters after sunset so fascinating.
