Every year, during this auspicious occasion, the people of Balagaun, Thankot, and surrounding villages come together to honor the goddess with heartfelt devotion and joyous celebration. The festival usually begins on Mūḥ Aṣṭhamī (मुः अष्टमी) — one of the most sacred Asthami days of the lunar calendar — and continues for several days with rituals, processions, and traditional performances. During the Balagaun Jatra, the image of Goddess Mahalaxmi is placed on a beautifully decorated chariot and carried around the village in a grand procession. Traditional Newar musical instruments like dhaa, dhimay, nyaakhin, and bhusya fill the air with rhythm and energy as devotees dance and chant along the route. The streets are filled with color — locals wear traditional attire, offer flowers and butter lamps, and prepare special foods to honor the goddess. The entire village glows with lights, music, and spiritual energy.
