A quiet bedtime story from Lantern Bay.
The first frost of the year arrives in the night, the way the first one always does, and by morning there is a thin white edge on everything in the bay — the bench on the dune path, every blade of marram, every plank of the upturned boat on the sand. It comes away under a finger. Nothing is frozen hard. It is only the first one.
And then the evening does something Mia does not expect: the bay gets louder.
Cold still air carries sound a very long way, so from the bench halfway up the path she can hear things she has never once heard from there. The rope on Onno's boat. Fiete shifting his feet on his post. Mrs Bendt's door, two hundred paces up and behind a whole dune, shutting as though it were just behind the bench. The geese out on the cut fields. The bell buoy, which sounds as though it has come into the bay.
And then, underneath all of it, the furthest sound of all — the small slow knock of the lighthouse lamp going round at the top of the tower. Mattis says you get about three evenings a year when you can hear it, and that this is one of them. So they sit and listen to it for a long time and say nothing at all.
Then forty minutes of calm ocean sound, so your child can drift off and stay asleep.
Nothing frightening happens here. Nobody is cold for long, nothing is lost, and everyone ends the evening beside a stove that has been going since the morning.
