This year, I reorganized the area for raspberries planted directly in the ground, removing those that had perished due to high heat and drought. I then planted five new raspberry plants, representing three different varieties. I also have two or three raspberry plants growing in containers.
All of these are "everbearing" (double-cropping) varieties. The first crop develops on canes that grew the previous year—blooming in the spring and fruiting in the summer—while the second crop grows on new canes that emerge in the spring, blooming in the summer and fruiting in the autumn.
As we reach late autumn here in Germany, I can compare the performance of the container-grown plants versus those planted in the ground.
Both the container-grown and ground-planted raspberries produced an autumn crop. The container-grown plants, benefiting from better sun exposure, yielded a larger quantity of fruit; in fact, one pot finished its entire autumn harvest by early autumn (as the limited nutrients in the potting soil prevented continued flowering and fruiting).
In terms of cane growth, the ground-planted raspberries have a clear advantage. All four varieties produced an abundance of canes, with some even taking root where they touched the soil. For the container-grown plants, environmental constraints mean that cane size is limited by the volume of the potting soil; even with better light, their canes are not as robust as those of the plants in the ground.
The raspberries that are currently still flowering and fruiting can continue to be harvested. Based on my experience from last year, as long as there is no frost, the fruit will continue to ripen, albeit slowly.
