In 865 AD an army landed in England — not to raid, but to conquer. At
its head was a man the sagas say could not walk, carried into battle
on a shield.
Ivar the Boneless is one of the strangest figures of the Viking Age:
physically frail, yet the most effective commander of his generation.
This episode separates the saga from the history — what "boneless"
might actually have meant, what the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records of
his campaigns at York, Northumbria and East Anglia, and what the
Repton excavation may or may not tell us about where he ended.
