What does the number 5 really mean? In this video, we break down a powerful idea that changes how students see numbers, expressions, and algebra: every number is really a count of something. Five isn't just "five"—it's five ones. And once you see numbers this way, combining like terms (in arithmetic, fractions, or algebra) stops feeling like a memorized rule and starts making real sense. We walk through this idea step by step, starting simple and building up: 1. Why 5 + 3 works because we're counting the same thing (ones) 2. How to combine expressions like 6 twos + 4 twos, and why that gives us 10 twos — which we can then re-count as tens or ones 3.
