In this video, we break down a step-by-step algebra word problem involving two timeline shifts (past and future) using a system of linear equations.
Problem:
5 years ago, Ben was thrice as old as Jenna. 10 years later, Ben will be twice as old as Jenna. How old are Ben and Jenna now?
We construct a clear timeline table to track their ages across all three points in time (5 years ago, now, and 10 years later). From there, we set up our system of linear equations (x = 3y and x + 15 = 2(y + 15)) and use the substitution method to solve for their current ages cleanly and easily.
