KEY NOTES
• Flower ke 4 whorls: calyx (sepals), corolla (petals), androecium (stamens, male), gynoecium (carpels, female)
• Stamen = filament + anther. Pistil = stigma + style + ovary (ovules inside)
• Anther: bilobed, tetrasporangiate (4 microsporangia)
• Anther wall (out to in): epidermis, endothecium, middle layers, tapetum (nourishes pollen)
• Microsporogenesis: pollen mother cell (2n) → meiosis → tetrad of 4 haploid (n) microspores → pollen grains
• Exine = sporopollenin (most resistant); germ pores = where sporopollenin is absent; intine = cellulose + pectin
• Pollen: vegetative cell + generative cell (2-celled). Generative cell → 2 male gametes. Pollen grain is NOT the male gamete
• Pollen banks: pollen stored in liquid nitrogen (-196°C)
• Ovule: funicle, hilum, integuments, micropyle, chalaza, nucellus
• Megasporogenesis: megaspore mother cell (2n) → meiosis → 4 megaspores (n) → 3 degenerate, 1 functional
• Functional megaspore → 3 mitotic divisions → 8 nuclei
• Embryo sac = 7 cells, 8 nuclei: egg apparatus (1 egg + 2 synergids) + 3 antipodals + 1 central cell with 2 polar nuclei
• Synergids have filiform apparatus: guides the pollen tube
• Autogamy = same flower. Geitonogamy = different flower, same plant (genetically like selfing). Xenogamy = different plant, same species (brings variation)
• Agents: wind, water (some aquatic plants), biotic (insects, birds, other animals)
• Chasmogamous = open flowers. Cleistogamous = closed flowers, self-pollination assured
• Outbreeding devices: dichogamy, herkogamy, self-incompatibility, unisexuality
• Monoecious: prevents autogamy, not geitonogamy. Dioecious: prevents both
• Artificial hybridisation: emasculation (remove anthers before dehiscence) → bagging → desired pollen → re-bag. Unisexual female flower: no emasculation
• Pollen-pistil interaction: compatible pollen germinates, incompatible pollen rejected; pollen tube grows through style to ovule
• Syngamy: male gamete (n) + egg (n) → zygote (2n) → embryo
• Triple fusion: male gamete (n) + 2 polar nuclei (n + n) → primary endosperm nucleus (3n) → endosperm
• Double fertilisation = syngamy + triple fusion. Two male gametes, two different partners
• Endosperm develops before the embryo
• Dicot embryo: 2 cotyledons, plumule, radicle. Monocot: 1 cotyledon (scutellum in grasses)
• Ovule → seed, integuments → seed coats, ovary → fruit, ovary wall → pericarp
• False fruit: thalamus also contributes (strawberry). True fruit: from ovary only
• Apomixis = seed without fertilisation. Parthenocarpy = fruit without fertilisation (seedless). Polyembryony = more than one embryo in a seed (citrus, orange)
• Parthenogenesis (development from an unfertilised egg) is NOT parthenocarpy
