Hand Thrown Chimney Pot Cowl

Kim Lyons throws an upside down chimney cowl out of terracotta clay on his modified wheel. Chimney cowls are used on top of the chimney on old buildings with wood or gas fire places to act as a rain cover. The cowl is thrown upside down and then turned and finished once dry enough to support its own weight. He attaches a knob to the top of the cowl, and cuts out windows to allow the flue gas to escape. The sharp lip acts as a drip ring when upright to ensure rain water doesn't enter the flue. Watch to the end to see the finished product!
