Gilbert O'Sullivan - Clair | I Thought This Song Was VERY Inappropriate… Until the Penny Dropped! 😳

Today I'm reacting to Gilbert O'Sullivan – “Clair,” his huge 1972 hit — and this song completely fooled me! When I first started listening to the lyrics, I genuinely thought Gilbert was singing about a romantic relationship, and some of the words had me thinking, “Hang on a minute… where exactly is this going?!” 😳 Then, as the song continued, the penny finally dropped. Clair isn't a romantic interest at all — she's a young child he's looking after, and suddenly everything I'd been hearing took on a completely different meaning. The song was inspired by Clair Mills, the young daughter of O'Sullivan's manager Gordon Mills. Gilbert O'Sullivan's real first name is Raymond, which also explains the “Uncle Ray” reference in the song. It made for a hilarious first-time listening experience because O'Sullivan had me going in completely the wrong direction before I finally understood what was happening!
