At BALADE école this week, we're taking a sculptural buckram hat from its carefully constructed foundation to the beginning of its final transformation. With the wired and padded shape complete, it's time to begin covering and trimming this intricate design. But this isn't quite a conventional hat construction process. With the trimming sitting beneath the hat, and a beautiful expanse of black satin forming the visible surface, the order of construction becomes just as important as the details themselves. Join me as I work through the next stage of this bespoke millinery design, exploring how to create a beautifully smooth fabric covering, secure intricate straw trimming and achieve a seamless finish. In this video, I'll be sharing: How to cover a sculptural buckram hat foundation with bias-cut satin Why working on the bias is essential for achieving a smooth, firm fit How to pin, stretch and secure fabric across a complex hat shape Hand-stitching techniques for securing fabric while keeping stitches discreet Working with intricate straw trimming to create a beautiful paisley design How stiffening helps refine straw, restore its shine and secure delicate details One of the most rewarding parts of making a hat is seeing a design begin to come to life. After spending so much time building the structure, we're finally starting to see the texture, detail and character of this piece emerge. There is still more to do before this hat is ready to wear. Next, we'll continue refining the trimming, finish the inside of the hat and add the lining. If you're interested in millinery, hat making, couture techniques or the thoughtful process of creating beautiful things by hand, I hope you'll enjoy following along.
