Restoring an abandoned log cabin in the woods : EP 1 - Initial Inspection

Welcome to the 1800s log cabin in the woods rehabilitation project. I first started by going around the exterior of the cabin and giving an initial “knock” test to get a rough estimate of the integrity of each individual log. Lower pitch = more hollow due to the air bouncing around the internal surfaces. Higher pitch = less hollow. I examined some of the maintenance strategies that have already been applied such as splitting a log in half and splicing on a piece. I have no clue if this is the best way to do this, comment below if you know anything about this or a different way. The exterior logs have a lot of holes in them that I am unsure of the cause. This cabin is located in the North woods of Wisconsin. I read to place a piece of white paper in one of the holes and check back later to see if any active sawdust is created. This will tell me if there is a current bug infestation in the logs. Let’s hope not. Spot the eagle in the last clip!
