Father & Daughter Builders: Hundreds of Jobs, Only One Went Sideways

What happens when a 40-year builder and his designer daughter run a company together? In this episode, Darryl and Alex of Vesta & Vulcan Builders talk about infill townhomes, rebuilding a historic Nashville home after the 2020 tornado, and why they bill clients transparently. You'll hear about: • Growing up in a family of tradespeople • From art history and silversmithing to design and building • Building five townhomes at 1701 Portland Avenue and playing with colorways • Putting a tornado-damaged roof back exactly as it was, in a historic district • Cost-plus billing and why change orders don't have to be painful • Knowing when a client isn't the right fit • Learning to say no to jobs that don't fit • Keeping a clean jobsite and being a good neighbor TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Intro 0:35 Meet Darryl and Alex 1:54 Alex's background in art and design 3:46 Infill and townhouse builds 5:20 The tornado rebuild on Russell Street 6:32 The Portland Avenue townhomes 7:18 Transparent cost-plus billing 8:36 When a client isn't a fit 10:19 Clients who know what they want vs. clients who don't 12:35 Working together as father and daughter 15:39 Learning to say no 16:39 Clean jobsites and good neighbors 17:56 Where to find them FIND VESTA & VULCAN BUILDERS Website: vestaandvulcan.com Instagram: @vestaandvulcan Honey Clutch (design): honeyclutch.com | @honey.clutch.design #construction #homebuilder #nashville #podcast #renovation #townhomes #interiordesign FABL DESIGN: Instagram: @fabl.design Get In Touch with FABL DESIGN https://www.fablarchitecture.com MISSION OF FABL DESIGN To make remodeling clearer, smoother, and more collaborative for homeowners, builders, and everyone involved. #NashvilleHomeBuilder #HomeRenovation #DesignBuild #HistoricHomes #homeremodeling #appliances #homebuilding #construction #kitchendesign #induction #podcast
